Many persons with eye diseases require corneal transplants as the ultimate stage in regaining normal vision, but rejection rates can reach 10%. This is related to poor patient adherence to treatments, which necessitate numerous administrations of topical eyedrops over time.

When patients exhibit signs of early rejection, they must use eyedrops hourly to keep the corneal grafts from failing. The time-consuming practice of eyedrop dosage places significant stress on patients, leading to more excellent graft-rejection rates.

Research led by Virginia Commonwealth University showed that using nanoparticles to encapsulate the drug might improve the success of corneal grafts. These nanoparticles comprises of a most commonly used corticosteroid dexamethasone sodium phosphate for treating eye diseases.

Patients would only need one injection after corneal transplantation surgery if nanoparticles were used to manage the release of the drug over time. Furthermore, the nanoparticle technique necessitates fewer doses than current standard eyedrop treatment while giving superior efficacy and safety profiles.

The nanoparticle technique reversed signals of early rejection and kept the grafts viable for six months. Researchers are now concentrating on developing nanotherapeutics for the safer and more effective treatment of numerous eye ailments.
